Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.33 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.75 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.13 tsp kosher salt
  • 4 cup whole milk divided
  • 4 oz semisweet chocolate finely chopped
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 1 3-quart saucepan

Method

  1. In a 3-quart saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Whisk in 1 cup of the milk until smooth.
  3. Whisk in the remaining 3 cups milk and the chopped chocolate.
  4. Heat over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, whisking often, until the chocolate is melted and the hot chocolate is steaming; do not let it boil.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Divide among 4 mugs and serve hot.

Notes

Whisk the cocoa mixture until smooth before adding the remaining milk to help prevent lumps. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days and reheat gently; freezing is not recommended. For a dairy-free variation, use oat milk and dairy-free semisweet chocolate.
