Ingredients

  • 3 lb sweet potatoes peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 4 tbsp butter unsalted
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar packed light
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon ground
  • 0.25 cup milk whole
  • 0.75 tsp salt kosher

Method

  1. Put the sweet potatoes in a 5-quart pot and cover with cold water.
  2. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a steady simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, until the pieces are easily pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain the sweet potatoes well and return them to the pot.
  4. Add the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, milk, and salt.
  5. Mash with a potato masher until mostly smooth and combined.
  6. Taste and serve warm.

Notes

For the smoothest texture, mash while the sweet potatoes are still hot. Refrigerate leftovers for 3 to 4 days; freezing is possible, though the texture may be softer after thawing. For a dairy-free version, use plant-based butter and unsweetened plant milk.
