Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 6 apples medium (about 2 1/2 pounds), peeled, cored, and sliced 1/2 inch thick
  • 0.33 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.13 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 cup water

Equipment

  • 1 12-inch skillet

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and water, stirring gently to coat the apples.
  3. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring gently once, until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.
  4. Uncover and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring gently, until the liquid has thickened into a light syrup.

Notes

Stir gently to help the apple slices hold their shape. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 4 days; freezing is not recommended because it can soften the apples. For a dairy-free version, use a plant-based butter substitute.
