Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk whole
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 2 tablespoons sugar granulated
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 2 ounces semisweet chocolate finely chopped
  • 0.5 cup coffee strong brewed
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 1 2-quart saucepan

Method

  1. In a 2-quart saucepan, whisk the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt with 1/2 cup of the milk until smooth.
  2. Gradually whisk in the remaining 1 1/2 cups milk and add the chopped chocolate; warm over medium-low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, whisking often, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is steaming.
  3. Stir in the brewed coffee and vanilla extract, then heat for 1 to 2 minutes until hot without boiling.
  4. Divide between two mugs and serve hot.

Notes

Whisk the cocoa powder with the first 1/2 cup of milk until smooth to help prevent lumps. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days; freezing is not recommended. For a dairy-free variation, use oat milk and dairy-free semisweet chocolate.
