Ingredients

  • 1 package (17.3 oz) puff pastry frozen, 2 sheets, thawed according to package directions
  • 0.5 cup Nutella
  • 1 egg large, beaten

Equipment

  • 1 large rimmed baking sheet

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Place one thawed puff pastry sheet on the prepared baking sheet and unfold it.
  4. Spread the Nutella evenly over the pastry, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
  5. Top with the second pastry sheet and align the edges.
  6. Use a sharp knife to cut the layered pastry into a tree shape with a centered trunk, keeping the tree within the pastry.
  7. Cut branches from both sides toward the center, stopping about 1 1/2 inches short of the center.
  8. Twist each branch away from the center 2 or 3 times.
  9. Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until puffed and deeply golden brown.
  11. Let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep the pastry cold while shaping for the flakiest layers. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; freeze baked leftovers for up to 1 month. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free chocolate-hazelnut spread and dairy-free puff pastry.
